September – National Preparedness Month

September - National Preparedness Month
September - National Preparedness Month

September 23, 2019 //  by John Skelly

Each September the EPA takes steps to educate Americans on the importance of being prepared for disasters in their homes, communities, and businesses. Here at HNST Mold Inspections, we like to highlight a particular area of preparedness that relates to mold – protecting yourself in event of a flood in your home.

Protecting yourself when entering your home after a flood or water event is crucial. As the EPA states:

After a flood, standing water and wet materials can be a breeding ground for microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and mold. They can trigger allergic reactions, cause disease and continue to damage belongings.

For a particularly large flood, wearing N-95 respirators, goggles, and gloves are recommended to protect you from breathing in and being exposed to things like microorganisms and mold spores. For more information on how to clean up after a flood and protect the indoor air quality of your home, download the EPA’s Flood Cleanup Fact Sheet.

If you’ve recently experienced a flood in your home due to natural weather occurrences or a mishap in the plumbing system of your home, consider the facts and take precautions. Mold inspections after a flooding event are crucial to determining what risk you are at for mold growth, what type of mold already exists and can help to guide you to the next steps in remediation.

For your mold inspection needs, call HNST Mold Inspections in New York at 845-215-9258 or in New Jersey at 201-733-0091.
